The Institute Building
The Institute's premises, completed in 2002, is situated in the historical centre of the old University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald. Right next to St. Nicholas' Cathedral, the Institute building, designed by Professor Dipl.-Ing. Michael Gaenssler, unites new substance with a restored historical building, the "Old Apothecary's Shop", the oldest half-timbered building constructed using the post and beam technique in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
On an area of 2,400 square metres, the Institute has workrooms for academics, students and the administration of the Institute foundation as well as conference rooms, a cafeteria and a large auditorium. Moreover there are thirteen apartments available for visiting academics. The total floor space of the Institute building is 4,500 square metres.
The Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung spent about 16 million euros on constructing the new Institute building and renovating the "Old Apothecary's Shop" integrated in the complex
