Caspar David Friedrich – the Original Drawings
The aim of this already advanced research project is to produce a scholarly chronological catalogue of all the identifiable original drawings by Caspar David Friedrich. In several volumes dealing with around 1000 sheets, this will for the first time give an overview of Friedrich’s complete oeuvre as a draughtsman. Technical details are being ascertained for each drawing, including the title, technique, size, designation, kind of paper and watermark. These are being supplemented by recommendations for further reading relevant to the respective sheet, facilitating reference to exhibition catalogues. The illustrations will be accompanied by well structured catalogue texts giving brief but precise information on the subject, the execution and research findings to date. All facts concerning the dating of the sheet, any use made of it in later works, Friedrich’s biography, the identification of locations represented and further details will be given. The information on each sheet will be completed with details of its original context (sketch book, album, collection of loose leaves) and cross references to other drawings by Friedrich.
