Companions and Antagonists: Aspects of the Forgotten Cultural Exchange between Prussia and Poland during the Enlightenment

In contrast to the history of the political relations between Prussia and Poland, the history of their cultural relations has hardly been investigated. This project aims to examine the history of Prussian-Polish cultural relations during the Enlightenment closely, uninhibited by national stereotypes. It will focus on the period just before Poland lost its sovereignty (1764–1795). These years cover not only the division of Poland between Prussia, Russia and Austria, but also the culmination of the Polish Enlightenment. It will be examined how mutual cultural relations developed in view of the facts that the two countries were neighbours and that Prussia undoubtedly pursed a repressive policy with regard to Poland. What forms of cultural exchange existed, and how were they affected by the course of political events? Special attention will be paid to the sympathies the Polish Enlightenment thinkers had for Prussia and to the dynamic Polish-Prussian cultural transfer in Prussian academic institutions.
