Economic Consequences of Judicial Systems

How do legal systems affect economic development? Does the organization of a court system (e.g. the number of supreme courts) have consequences for economic development? How relevant is the respective historical origin of a legal system (e.g. common law vs. civil law)? Does the involvement of laypersons (jury, lay judges) in the administration of justice have systematic consequences? Given that an independent judiciary leads to higher rates of growth, what channels lead to this effect? Can the development of a country be encouraged in the long term by creating an adequate judicial structure? Do international courts have a part to play? The project aims to answer at least some of the above questions.
