Translation of and Commentary on the Protreptikos of Clement of Alexandria

Clement of Alexandria (mid-2nd to early 3rd centuries) was one of the outstanding representatives of Christianity in his time who raised Christian literature to the level of contemporary artistic prose. One of the surviving works by Clement is the Protreptikos (“exhortation”) to the heathens. The commentary aims to clarify the problematic passages which occur frequently due to the nature of the sources, to situate the text in its literary and historical context, to examine the methods by which Clement intended to persuade non-Christians to embrace Christianity, and to highlight the theology becoming visible in the Protreptikos. Besides new findings which will help to characterize Clement of Alexandria’s theology and throw light on the development of Christianity at the turn of the 2nd and 3rd centuries, insights into the classical literary form of “exhortation” or “admonition”, its methods and its forms of argument are to be expected.
