Aims

The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald is an independent academic institution in the centre of the venerable Hanseatic and university city on the Baltic Sea. Together with the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung established it in order to enhance the excellence of the University.

The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg brings scholars and scientists of various disciplines together to cooperate on focal areas of research. It invites academics who want to devote themselves to a major research project to Greifswald for a whole or half an academic year as Alfried Krupp Senior Fellows or as Alfried Krupp Junior Fellows. Moreover the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg supports young academics in close cooperation with the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald by awarding doctoral grants in connection with its own postgraduate programmes and interdisciplinary research projects. In this way it seeks to strengthen international academic contacts, especially in the Baltic Sea region, to make Greifswald attractive as an academic location with its own profile and to enable the region of Vorpommern to develop potential for the future based on knowledge. By inviting prominent figures from academia, politics and culture to Greifswald to present their views on their fields of research and activity, it also provides a forum in the heart of the centre of the venerable Hanseatic and university city for the dialogue between the University and the inhabitants of the region.
