Conferences, Symposia and Summer Schools
The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg gathers academics from all over Germany, Europe and the world for conferences, international symposia and summer schools. Programmes of our conferences can be downloaded as PDF files from our calendar of events.
Innovative proposals for topics are taken up for conferences in the Institute. Proposals may be made by any academic (i.e. anyone with a doctorate) in Germany or abroad. As a matter of principle, only proposals referring to conferences intended to held at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg can be considered.
If a proposal for a conference is accepted, the Institute requests the academic who submitted the proposal to assume the preparation and running of the conference as regards all matters of content.
For a conference proposal to be successful, it is important that the topic be innovative and of great academic interest , that prominent speakers be invited, and that it be planned in such a way that the academic resonance beyond the invited speakers should be as great as possible. As a matter of principle AGMs of associations, conferences refused elsewhere, conferences in honour of anniversaries etc. cannot be included in the programme of conferences.
All conferences included in the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg's programme of conferences may be attended by any members of the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald free of charge.
Proposals for conferences can be submitted informally at any time; as a first step it is recommended to send the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg (D-17487 Greifswald) a clear concept (about 5 to 12 pages) with a detailed exposition of the topic and aim of the conference, naming the speakers to be considered. Proposals for conferences may also be submitted directly to the academic manager in electronic form as MS Word files.
If a proposal is accepted, funds will be provided to an amount determined by the Institute. These will at least cover the rental of the rooms required in the Institute, as a rule also travelling expenses and possibly catering and other costs. If a proposal is accepted, the Institute will calculate the costs, thus these need not be included in the proposal. Conferences should if possible be proposed to the Institute 12 to 14 months before the date envisaged, so that the possibility of co-financing (e.g. by the German Research Society) can be checked if necessary. As a rule it is worth asking other potential sponsors whether a conference may be included in the Institute's programme, because in such a case the prospect of acquiring co-financing is often good.
The Institute cannot provide any subsidies for conferences which take place outside its own programme of conferences under the responsibility of other organizers.
