1806 - End or new beginning? The fall of the Old Empire from a North German and Scandinavian perspective

For the bicentenary of the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (1806-2006), the pilot project "1806", sponsored by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung and directed Prof. Dr. Michael North by is being carried out at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg in Greifswald.
The project is examining the various perceptions from a north German and Scandinavian perspective of the break-up of the Old Empire in 1806, and thus the significant transformation process which began with the French Revolution in 1789, led to the foundation of the German Confederation in 1815 and prepared the ground for the formation of a German national state.
Research is carried out, regular interdisciplinary events are held and a symposium on the topic "The end of the Old Empire in the Baltic region" took place (8th to 10th June 2006). Moreover the results of the research project will be published as a book.
