Later is a Patriarchal Time Zone: Feminist Demilitarization Starts In the Middle of War

Öffentlicher Abendvortrag

Despite little media coverage, women activists have been hard at work during the dangerous, challenging days of so many wars: in Syria, in Liberia, in the former Yugoslavia, in Northern Ireland. Feminists have learned from experience that when people advise them to „wait until the war is over; then we‘ll address women‘s rights,“ that alleged time never comes. „Later“ is a patriarchal time zone. Feminists have learned to tackle gendered militarized injustices creatively while the war is raging.

Cynthia Enloe is Research Professor of Politics and Women‘s and Gender Studies at Clark University in Massachusetts. Her books include Bananas, Beaches and Bases: Making Feminist Sense of International Politics (updated edition, 2014), Nimo‘s War, Emma‘s War: Making Feminist Sense of the Iraq War (2012), and The Big Push: Exploring and Challenging Persistent Patriarchy (2017). University of London, University of Lund are among the universities that have awarded Cynthia honorary doctorates. Cynthia is one of the 100 people named on the Gender Justice Wall at the International Crimes Court in The Hague.
