From a Socialist Spectacle to a Community-Based Event: Poland in the Mirror of Festivals

Public lecture

Can festivals be treated as valuable windows into culture and society? What can you see with them? How were festivals organized in the 1950s, and what is important today? Poland in the mirror of festivals is a story about transformation: values ​​and people.

Waldemar Kuligowski is a professor at the Department of Anthropology and Ethnology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. He’s also a head of the Section of Cultural Anthropology. He was conducting fieldworks in Europe, Asia, and America. He was published dozen of books, also as co-editor, e. g.: Art in contemporary cultural systems: Central and Eastern Europe (2014); Sterile and Isolated? An Anthropology Today in Hungary and Poland (2015); Festivals and Values. Music, Community Engagement and Organisational Symbolism (2023 – in progress). His research interests focus on the theory of culture, reflexive ethnography, anthropology of motorway, festivals and festivalization. His essays and article has been published in the leading Polish newspapers and magazines.

The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg is offering this event live as a zoom meeting in which viewers can participate in writing via chat.

  • We would be pleased if you provided your clear name when dialing into Zoom. Of course, you can also take part in the event under a pseudonym.

Recording of the digital lecture
The digital lecture will be recorded for use in the college's media library. Only the speaker, his/her presentation and the moderator will be heard or seen in the recording. Video, audio or chat contributions are not recorded. A "REC" sign at the edge of the picture informs the participants.
