Junges Kolleg Greifswald

The Junges Kolleg (JKG) is an academic forum for Greifswald recipients of scholarships provided by the organisations for supporting gifted students and the Deutschlandstipendium and serves to promote early career researchers.

By including students from all disciplines and subjects, the Junges Kolleg enables exchanges with joint events and offers participants the opportunity to accentuate advanced academic research interests and develop their own profile.

Tasks and Methods
The Junges Kolleg is unique in Germany with its function as a working platform to promote students. It was established to enrich the financial support of various foundations and organisations for supporting gifted students with additional scientific ideas. The members of the Kolleg are free to choose the working methods. Work is supported by two Junges Kolleg members who coordinate the projects and lead the meetings of the planning committee. Besides regular planning meetings by the JKG’s most important planning body, members can also organise events on their own in smaller working groups. The spectrum of events ranges from classic lectures to discussion rounds, colloquia, excursions and practical workshops or smaller discussion groups with invited experts. When organizing these events, members can rely on the regular support of current and former Fellows of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg, Greifswald scientists and external experts. By networking with well-known scientists, Kolleg members have the opportunity to carry out their own scientific events. All interested persons are typically invited to the JKG’s events.

Planning Committee
The Junges Kolleg’s central organ is the Planning Committee, which meets once a month. At these meetings, the JKG’s events are planned and supervised by a group of between 10 and 15 Kolleg members. Suggestions for events may be introduced to the Planning Committee by all University of Greifswald students.

Members
The members of the Junges Kolleg are students and doctoral candidates from various disciplines at the University of Greifswald. The number of members is expanded by an alumni network.

Institutional Context
The Junges Kolleg is under the sponsorship of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald and was established in the summer of 2012 as a fourth program pillar in addition to the fellows, lecture and conference program. The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg supports the work of the Junges Kolleg with personnel, organisational, logistical and financial resources and is available as a point of contact for the Kolleg members to discuss scientific topics from various disciplines and the relationship between science and society.
