This international conference takes as its starting point the observation that the consensus society is breaking down, a process accompanied by the delegitimisation of discursive practices and the emergence of a society characterised by conflicting social, cultural and political positions. Inspired by Georg Simmel’s theory of conflict, the conference will explore the strategies offered by the academic disciplines to counter a growing mistrust of the institutions of science, law and politics. The aim is to identify theoretical options that strengthen the capacity to manage conflict and tolerate ambiguity, and to counter a widespread attitude of apathy with an ethos of not evading or turning a blind eye to crisis and conflict scenarios.
