Fellow project: „Contexts of roman grave monuments and their reception in the museum landscape of the 20th century“

Whereas the subject of 'death' is to a great extent avoided in today’s society, it was far more present in the everyday-life of Roman antiquity. The access roads to the cities, but also those leading across the country, were characterised by burials and by elaborate grave monuments dominating the scenery. Using the antique metropolis Augusta Treverorum (today’s Treves) as an example, the project first wants to reconstruct the original contexts and to analyse the monuments using methods of aesthetics of reception and pictorial science. Thereby, special attention is paid to the figural décor withits manifold depictions from the lived-in world and myth. In addition, the modern restorations, which in part distort the original condition, shall be identified. Finally, the museum presentation of the monuments in the 20th century shall be examined.
