Process Intensification for Waste Valorization: Chemo-Enzymatic Cascade Reactions

Fellow Lecture

Chemistry has over the decades been able to develop very complex transformations to produce multifunctional molecules. Although these advances are important, we still use round-bottom flasks and batch reactors as we did 200 years ago. The chemistry industry is undergoing a continuous-manufacturing transformation, where technology will play a major role. In addition to representing a bright future for chemical synthesis, flow chemistry technology offers underdeveloped countries an opportunity to develop their industrial bases and become self-sufficient when it comes to specialty chemicals, from basic pesticides for agriculture to complex molecules to support their basic health system, such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). We have spent the last few years developing chemo and enzymatic methodologies for the synthesis of fine chemicals, intermediates, and APIs that are important to the Brazilian chemical industry.

Rodrigo Octavio Mendonça Alves de Souza started his independent career in 2008 at Chemistry Institute of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, establishing the Biocatalysis and Organic Synthesis Group. They have published more then 200 original articles and patents, books and book chapters. Rodrigo Souza was named Young Scientist of Rio de Janeiro from the Rio de Janeiro Research State Foundation for two consecutive years, received the Hanz Vietler Prize for young researchers from the Brazilian Chemical Society and the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship for experienced researchers. In the academic year 2022/23 he is a senior fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg.

Welcome: Professorin Dr. Ulla Bonas

Organizational information
The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg is offering this event live as a zoom meeting in which viewers can participate in writing via chat.

  • We would be pleased if you provided your clear name when dialing into Zoom. Of course, you can also take part in the event under a pseudonym.
  • A list of all participants can be viewed by all those involved throughout the event.
  • During the lecture, the microphones of the spectators are all automatically muted so that no disturbing background noise is generated. You are welcome to turn on the camera of the spectators during the lecture.
  • During the entire event, requests to speak or questions can be asked in writing in the chat.

Recording of the digital lecture
The digital lecture will be recorded for use in the college's media library. Only the speaker, his/her presentation and the moderator will be heard or seen in the recording. Video, audio or chat contributions are not recorded. A "REC" sign at the edge of the picture informs the participants.
