Fellow project: "Slavs, Poles, Swedes, Mecklenburg. The construction of political identities from the early Middle Ages to the 18th century based on the equation of the ethnonyms 'Wends' and 'Vandals'"

What I plan during the time in Greifswald is questioning ethnonyms and underlying historical narratives as well as their use for the construction of political identities over a millennium of European history. The equation of Vandals and Wends has a long history ranging from the 8th to the 18th century. The longue durée of the phenomenon gives the chance to obtain extensive insight into the development of various medieval and modern historical frameworks of political identity, ranging from early medieval manuscripts to Polish chronicles and later from Hanseatic to Danish and Swedish historiography.

Fellow report in the academic year 2016/17 (in German)
