The Croy Tapestry of 1554 is among the most significant textile artworks of the early modern period in the Baltic Sea region—not only because of its extraordinary size of over 30 square meters. The tapestry, on display at the Pomeranian State Museum and owned by the University of Greifswald, depicts members of Pomeranian and Saxon-Ernestine ruling dynasties attending a sermon by Martin Luther. Probably produced in Stettin/Szczecin, this monumental tapestry constitutes an impressive testimony to courtly representation, political memoria, and confessional identity.
Taking the Croy Tapestry as its point of departure, the international conference adopts a European comparative perspective on courtly tapestry culture in the sixteenth century. It addresses techniques and workshop contexts, iconographic programs, functions, and processes of artistic and cultural exchange.
